Once Shiva and Parvati held a competition between their sons Ganesh and Kartikeya. They were given the challenge to move around the world three times. The one who wins, would receive the fruit of wisdom. Kartikeya, with his peacock mount, quickly set off. Ganesh, on his mouse, realized he couldn't compete with Kartikeya’s speed. Instead, he moved around his parents, Shiva and Parvati three times. He took for them as his entire world. Pleased with his devotion and wisdom, Shiva and Parvati gave him the divine fruit.

ସଭା ହସରେ ଫାଟିପଡ଼ିଲା, ପୂର୍ବର ବ୍ୟଙ୍ଗ ସ୍ଥାନରେ ପ୍ରକୃତ ମନୋରଞ୍ଜନ ଆସିଗଲା। ଅଚାନକ ଧରାପଡ଼ିଥିବା ରାଜା ମଧ୍ୟ ନିଶ୍ୱାସ ଛାଡ଼ିଲେ ଏବଂ ସହଜ ଭାବରେ ହାଇ ମାରିଲେ। ରାମ ତାଙ୍କୁ ତୀକ୍ଷ୍ଣ ଦୃଷ୍ଟିରେ ଦେଖିଲେ, ତାପରେ କହିଲେ, “ମହାରାଜ, ଏହି ଦୁନିଆରେ କ’ଣ କେହି ଅଛି ଯେ ହାଇ ମାରେ ନାହିଁ? ଏହା ନିଶ୍ୱାସ ନେବା ଭଳି ପ୍ରାକୃତିକ।”
